Nice is one cool gal. But let's get into her awesometastic self after you get familiar with the choatic yet entertaining world of Baccano! and how Nice fits in. One can't fully appreciate Nice unless one appreciates Baccano! as well...
...where it all began
Baccano!, a light novel series by Japanese author Narita Ryougo, is Italian for "ruckus", apparently but our crazy author emphasizes that it means "stupid commotion". But that doesn't really tell you much about the story other than the fact that, well, it's kinda crazy. Set in 1930s American during the height of the Prohibition era, Baccano! is a big mudpie of gangsters, rich brats pretending to be gangsters, alchemist, magic, theives who don't steal anything of value, and... eternal life?
"Lol, whut?" you ask. You are not wrong, my friend. That was my initial reaction when our resident Baccano! encyclopedia Janice tried relentlessly to get me into the series. At first I hesitated. Mafia? Good. Fighting? Good. Lots of blood? Awesome. 3 different timelines? Errr, confusing. 10+ differenet sets of characters and storylines converging? OMG, my brain hurts.
That might be your first impression too, when/if you read or watch the series. But fear not, I will try to break it down for you. Let's forget about the 1711 timeline and just keep in mind that there is an Elixir of Life which makes people unable to die and there are people in the 1930s timelines who are immortal as a result.
1930 is really about the Elixir of Life and is set in New York. The story mainly involves the Gandor's, Martillo's, Runorata's, Szilard Quates, Dallas Genoard and, of course, Isaac Dian and Miria Harvent. 1931 is a year after and the story is set on the transcontinental train, Flying Pussyfoot. On the train are several parties and as a result, lots of people die. Individuals involved are the Lemures, the Russo's, Jacuzzi and crew, the Rail Tracer, Czeslaw Meyer, and Isaac and Miria.
There is also a bit of background on 1711 in the anime as well as the search for Dallas Genoard in 1932. As for the rest of the timelines (most of 1932, 1933, 1934, 2001 and 2002), I won't go into since they haven't been made into the anime and I am not entirely familiar with the novels as of yet.
For more information on the Baccano! series, timelines, or any of the characters, you should most definitely visit Guns & Roses.
...this is me
So who is Nice and how does she fit into this crazy mess of a story?
Nice is a young, teenage girl (probably around 15) who is childhood friends with Jacuzzi Splot, a boy who runs a bootleg alcohol ring in Chicago. Nice has an affinity to bombs, as one probably can tell from the name of this site. She gets a thrill from setting them off and blowing things up. She is always carrying numerous types of bombs on her person. Sometime in her childhood, she lost her right eye due to bombs and now wears and eyepatch. But what's better is, she carries a cherry bomb in her eye socket! How freaking cool is that!
Nice first appears in the series (chronologically) in 1931 aboard the Flying Pussyfoot. Because Jacuzzi and the whole crew got into trouble with the Russo family in Chicago, they took the train to New York to look for a new place to establish a foothold. Other than that main objective, Nice also found evidence of a huge load of explosives being transported on the Flying Pussyfoot. Being the bomb fanatic that she is, she decided that they would steal everything.
Little does she know that things are not so simple; they were not the only people looking for trouble on that train. With opposing sides of Lemures and Ladd Russo starting an all out war on each other, then sprinkle in a bit of Vino/Rail Tracer, not very cute little Czes, and a little bit of Isaac and Miria for everyone... you've got yourself a very bloody party. Jacuzzi decides to help the innocent passengers by "taking care" of the problem, with Nice's help. In the end, things work out. Nobody Not many people die, Nice gets her bombs, and they get to New York safely. Yay!
...and some visuals?
Can't have a character shrine without some images. I capped over 100 screenshots of Nice from the first half of the anime.
Head over to the media, gimme gimme!
About
...what is a fanlisting
Quoth TAFL:
A fanlisting is a web clique that lists fans of a particular subject. Unlike most web cliques, a person does not need a web site in order to join. Fans from around the world submit their information to their approved fanlisting and they are then listed to show their love for the subject.
Fanlistings have become quite the fad since it first caught on several years ago. It first started with TFL but now, anime and manga related fanlistings fall under a separate network, TAFL. Both joining and maintaining fanlistings have become quite a hobby for webmasters. Right now, many webmasters have a "fanlisting collective", where they list all the fanlistings they own and have joined. The fanlisting-owner community has grown quite large; just take a look at the TAFL board.
...at first glance
This layout... took the life out of me. First of all, I spent 8-10 hours vectoring Nice from a crappy screencap since I wasn't able to find any "layoutable" images of her. Then I was unsure of how to make that into a layout. In the end, I went with a simple layout. But the coding was a freaking nightmare. The stupid layout wouldn't align bottom and center and it looks horrible in IE (it still does). So I took some "inspiration" from Keigo and finally the layout worked. The navigation is a fun little javascript I'm using for Zangetsu[ORG] as well. Nifty, eh?
Oh and if you noticed, the font used for the word "Bombtastic!" under Nice's elbow is very similar to what's used in the anime. It took me about an hour to find something close to it T___T
